The Elders NSW Country Eagles have defeated a strong UC Vikings outfit 60-28 in an 8 try display of attacking rugby at Viking Park on Sunday.
At one stage, the Eagles led 60-0, before a number of late tries added some respectability to the scoreline. The game started at a frenetic pace, with the Eagles holding the majority of possession and not allowing the Vikings to gain any attacking ascendancy. “I thought we started really well and controlled the tempo of the game” Alex Newsome said after the game. Newsome opened the scoring in the 2nd minute with an intercept try against the run of play, the second of his three intercept tries so far this season.
The Eagles continued to pile on the points through impressive close range attacks from Ned Hanigan, Sam Ward and man of the match Rowan Perry. The Eagles led 30-0 at half time. The second half begun in a similar fashion, with the Eagles finding space all over the paddock to launch long range attacking raids. Reece Robinson and Kyle Godwin scored tries, whilst Newsome and Perry picked up their second of the match as we added another 30 unanswered points to take the scoreline to 60-0. The UC Vikings dominated the last stanza of the game, taking advantage of the 13 man Eagles outfit, who had two men in the bin due to repeated infringements. “I thought the Vikings played really well in that last twenty minutes. Obviously it is a bit disappointing not to keep the clean sheet, but overall we were really happy with the way we played” said Ned Hanigan. The final score finishing 60-28 in favour of the Eagles.
